LOT 0142

Eleanor Roosevelt

[ translate ]

TLS, one page, 6 x 9.75, White House letterhead, August 19, 1941. Letter to Secretary of the Interior Harold Ickes, in full: "I very much appreciate your letter of August 13 on the problems of the Navajos and what is being done to solve these problems. Many thanks for taking so much trouble to answer my inquiry." In fine condition. Well known for her activism, Roosevelt sought to improve the lives of Native Americans. Later, she would specifically recognize the contributions of the Navajos during America's effort in World War II: 3,400 Navajos served in World War II and 15,000 were engaged in war work at home. Their bond purchases and involvement in Red Cross affairs were massive, especially considering their low incomes in comparison to the average American.
