Elegant Roman Glass Trefoil Oinochoe
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 3rd to 4th century CE. An elegant free-blown glass oinochoe (pouring vessel) shaped from semi-translucent amber glass. The vessel is defined by a near-spherical body with a rounded shoulder, a cylindrical neck with a trefoil spout and rolled rim, and an arching trail handle applied between the rim and shoulder. There is no foot, but instead a deep dimple on the underside, with a partially smoothed pontil mark. An applied glass decoration is around the center of the neck, which only partially remains. Layers of brilliant rainbow-hued iridescence are scattered across the surfaces and nicely complement the vessel's vibrant amber hue. Size: 4.1" W x 6.7" H (10.4 cm x 17 cm)
Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Martin J. Wunsch collection, New York, USA, 1980s
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.
#146562
Condition Report: An applied glass strip under the neck is partially lost. Otherwise the piece is intact. Light earthen deposits and nice areas of rainbow iridescence throughout. Pontil scar on underside. A pontil scar or mark indicates that a vessel was free-blown, while the absence of such a mark suggests that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or wore away over time.
