Elegant cabinet - Burr walnut, Walnut, glued on oak - about 1740/1760

[ translate ]

Elegant curved cabinet, beautiful design and very fine veneer. Very skilfully and probably made by a furniture maker or workshop in one of the important furniture centers of Amsterdam or The Hague, in the 18th century. The corner entrance is special. *A similar cabinet with a similar corner entrance is located in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. (See photo with cabinet set) The cabinet in the Rijksmuseum is estimated at 1750. **A so-called "Spiegelcomptoir" with exactly the same corner entrance and dated around 1760, was auctioned in 2005 at Sotheby's Amsterdam, lot 135, see the footnote to this lot for further information. This cabinet was probably made around 1740/1760. The fitting is Louis XVI/Empire and therefore of a later date - around 1800. See photos - next to the current fittings, two round dots are visible where the original fittings used to be. See also the detail photo of the dovetails and the locks. Root nut is glued to quarter sawn oak. This wood was taken from the lower part of the walnut tree close to the roots. There the wood is very muddled and cloudy in structure and this gives the beautiful drawing. You can only see from the back how old the cabinet is, that oak has never been waxed and polished. The cabinet is of high quality and in very good condition. Only the bottom left side was a damage that has been repaired. It can be taken apart into parts, base cabinet with drawers, middle part and hood.
