Elephant Form Earthenware Planter
17 x 9 x 12 inches. A large ceramic planter or watering vessel modeled in the form of a stylized elephant. The vessel features a recumbent body supported by four short, rounded feet. A wide arched handle connects the top of the head to the rear of the body, and the trunk is extended to function as a spout. The piece is finished in a monochromatic creamy-white glaze with an intentional fine network of crazing across the entire surface. The top of the body contains a large oval aperture for filling. Small blue and brown pigment spots are visible beneath the glaze on the head and ears. The underside of the base is recessed and glazed. An impressed mark is visible in the center of the base (photo 6), but the characters are shallow and obscured by the glaze, rendering the text illegible. The foot rims are unglazed.
