Eli Griffiths Nautical Naval or Rail Lanterns (2)
One of the two (nearly identical) railroad or naval / nautical lanterns has the Griffiths plaque ("Eli Griffiths & Sons, Ltd., Birmingham"), the other lantern does not have this plaque. We believe these lanterns were repainted and a design may have been added in a leaf pattern with gold paint. There is some black paint on the bottom of some of the glass panes. Two nautical style metal, lanterns with wood handles. 5 Glass panes (1 pane is cracked on the non-plaqued lantern) are framed in each lantern, and protected by the metal bars encircling the lanterns. Our research has led us to believe that these lamps may have been manufactured by Griffiths & Sons Ltd anytime between 1890 and the 1930s, but Birmingham was a heavy industrial city pre WWII, and Griffiths made equipment for the railroad and naval industries. Hinges and latches function correctly. There is also a heat / light reflector under the hinged lids in both lanterns. One of the chain connectors appears to be a replaced part on non-plaqued lantern.
