Elie Anatole Pavil Montmartre French Oil 3 of 4, Observers at a Concert, Ukrainian French artist active in the Paris cafe scene in the early 20th century, one of four works by the artist offered separately in this sale, oil on panel, 5.5 x 8.6 inches, 11.25 x 14.3 x 1.5 inches framed, signed E. Pavel and dated 1915 lower right, titled Concert Populaire Montmartre in ink and inscribed 31 several times together with a modern collector label verso. Provenance: The artists estate from the artists daughter, Paris, France, 1972 by James Sheppard, Sheppard Fine Art, Nantucket, Massachusetts to Pauline Pocock Antiques, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida to the Krassner Seymour Cooke Collection formerly of Kennebunkport, Maine, removed from their waterfront Southeast Florida estate in late 2021, accompanied by a photocopy of a 1995 letter from Pauline Pocock on gallery letterhead detailing her acquisition of all of her Pavil paintings from Sheppard and verifying that both of the Cooke Pavils originated from Sheppard who had acquired them from the daughter of Pavil from his estate at her 30 Rue Flaubert address in 1972. Note that while the Pocock letter details two Pavils, Mrs. Cooke informed us on a visit prior to picking up the estate that all four of her Pavils originated from Mrs. Pocock. CXRL7
Condition Report: Paint sound, post War varnishing. Liner heavily stained and separating, inner gilt liner sound, frame side edge wear.
