Provenance: Commissioned by the Smithsonian between 1991 and 1993, this 100% cotton quilt is a limited reproduction of Eliza Jane Baile's original masterpiece from 1851 that resides in the National Museum of American History. Done in the classic "album quilt" style, the quilt contains 25 unique botanical panels, all done with unusual precision (especially for an import), including reverse, single, double and triple applique' as well as hand embroidered accents. It's surrounded by a red sawtooth border and outer strawberry applique border. Eliza Jane Baile, the daughter of Abner Baile (1807-1894) and Frances Pole Baile (1813-1893) was born February 13, 1832, in Maryland. According to Eliza’s obituary, her mother was a descendent of Edward III, King of England. At age nineteen, Eliza married Levi Manahan (1824-1893) on October 11, 1851. They reared eight children on a farm near Westminster, Carroll County, Maryland. She finished the quilt (of which this one is modeled after) a few months after her marriage.
