[ translate ]

UNITED KINGDOM. Elizabeth II, 1952-2022.
Gold 5 Pounds (5 Sovereigns), 2005. Royal Mint. Proof.
Fourth crowned head of Elizabeth II facing right; IRB below; ELIZABETH · II · DEI · GRA REGINA · FID · DEF. Design by Ian Rank-Broadley. / Armoured and helmeted St. George, carrying a shield with the cross of St. George and brandishing a sword, dragon below left, date below. Design by Timothy Noad. Edge milled.

Timothy Noad’s striking reinterpretation of St George and the Dragon gives the 2005 sovereign coinage a distinctive character. The armoured saint carries a shield bearing the cross of St George and raises his sword against the dragon, creating a richly detailed composition particularly effective on the expansive Five-Sovereign coin.

Graded NGC PF70 Ultra Cameo, the present example combines the highest numerical grade with pronounced contrast between frosted devices and deeply mirrored fields. With a stated mintage of just 2,161, this is a desirable example of an individual design within the modern sovereign series, offered in the largest denomination.
