Elizabeth II, Queen of the United Kingdom Autograph letter signed ('Elizabeth') as a young Princess, to Lady Astor, reading "I am so sorry not to have sent the photograph before but here it is at lats. I do hope the soldier has not gone away. It was entirely my fault that the photograph was not returned at once and I do hope he will forgive me", one page, folding marks, light soiling and discolouration, 8vo, Windsor Castle, 26 August 1940, with original mailing envelope; sold together with: the photograph mentioned in the letter, featuring Buckingham Palace with the floodlights on, signed on the verso by Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret and annotated by Elizabeth on the verso "Buckingham Place floodlit, May 1935, given to me by bobby in London, 1940", creasing, 6 x 8.5cm; two autograph letters from Mary Astor, who sent the photograph and Princess Elizabeth's letter back to the vendor's father, the original owner of the picture. (5) PROVENANCE: the lot is accompanied by a letter from the vendor, stating "My father was born in Montreal and joined the Canadian Army, 1st Division, Signal Corps in 1939. While in England in 1940, he was hospitalised on the Cliveden Estate. The grounds of Cliveden, the Astors' English mansion property, had been temporarily given to the Canadian Red Cross by Waldorf Astor and his wife, Nancy, for the building of a hospital there that existed until the end of the war. During my father's stay, Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret visited the hospitalised troops. My father had some pictures on his bed which included a small black and white picture of Buckingham Palace with the floodlights on. Princess Elizabeth asked if she could borrow the picture to show her father the King. Princess Elizabeth returned the picture with a letter of apology for the delay.
