He transcended to international fame when Clifford Irving made a biographical story about him and Orson Welles made the documentary about his controversial and fascinating career, F for Fake (1973) . At the end of his life he achieved what he was really looking for, social recognition of his talent, even if it was through the recreation of the styles of the greats and not his own.
