Emil Ebers, Soldiers at Rest amid Ruins

[ translate ]

Emil Ebers

Soldiers at Rest amid Ruins

Oil on canvas (relined). 54.5 x 76.5 cm.

Signed upper left: E. Ebers 1839.

Emil Ebers was born in Silesia. He drew most of the motifs for his paintings from the world of smugglers, fishermen, sailors, and soldiers. The present work depicts one of the latter motifs, showing a small group of soldiers resting in a ruined building. The pig being led into their makeshift camp is probably intended as the soldiers' next meal. Ebers studied at the Düsseldorf Academy under Schadow, but in this work the figures and composition are clearly inspired by those of the painter Carl Friedrich Lessing in Breslau, to whose sister Ebers was married.
