Emil Nolde
Emil Nolde
1867 - 1956
Meer mit Dampfer und orangefarbenem Himmel. Um 1938/1945.
Watercolor and gouache.
Signed in the upper right [overpainted]. On hand-made Japan. 17 x 22.7 cm (6.6 x 8.9 in), the full sheet. [CH].
• Nolde captures the experience of nature—the moment when the last rays of sunlight illuminate the evening sky—and transfers it directly into his painting with vivid emotion.
• Using his characteristic wet-on-wet technique, the artist creates an expressive landscape that straddles the line between Naturalism and Abstraction.
• In his seascapes, Nolde gets closest to abstraction.
• The North Sea in a blaze of color: With his atmospheric landscape paintings, he is still regarded as the greatest watercolorist of the 20th century.
Accompanied by a written confirmation by Dr. Manfred Reuther, then director of the Seebüll Ada and Emil Nolde Foundation, dated March 29, 2004 (copy). The work is registered in the archive of the Seebüll Ada and Emil Nolde Foundation under the number Fr.A.2104 and will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné of Emil Nolde’s watercolors and drawings.
PROVENANCE: Private collection, North Rhine-Westphalia.
Galerie Utermann, Dortmund.
Private collection, Southern Germany (acquired from the above in 2011).
