The print is a trial proof for la Fin de Satan de Victor Hugo, published in 1935 (Eau-forte et aquatinte imprimée en bistre: 347 x 245 [468 x 358 mm]. Morane 102) as part of an edition celebrating the fifty year anniversary of the death of Victor Hugo. It was printed for Pierre Guerquin in a edition of 120 on Vélin d'Arches. In 1932, Ambroise Vollard introduced Emile Bernard to Louis Barthou, Président des Amis du Livre contemporain, a society of bibliophiles commissioning deluxe limited editions of artists’ illustrated books.
