Large and beautiful, expressive sculpture by Emile Louis Picault. Signature is clearly legible. Depicting Vercingetorix / Ambiorix. With inscription: "Vincere aut Mori" which means "Overcome or death". Vercingetorix was a Gallic-Celtic monarch (b. 82 BC - 46 BC) . He has a weapon belt; striking combative helmet and a heavy sword. He assumes a heroic posture and points to the ground. The pedestal is decorated with a shield, a battle-axe and oak leaves. Mounted on a 4 cm high octagonal white marble base. According to Bronze Sculptors & Founders Vol. IV, Bl. 907, image 3465 (similarly depicted there) . Emile Louis Picault (1839-1915) was a sculptor and medal maker. He was a student of Roger's, working in Paris. Please note: The red marble pedestal does not belong to the sculpture. Shipping is possible in consultation.
