The bond between the city of Naples and Emilio Notte was born when the artist won in 1929 the chair of Decoration at the Academy of Naples. In the years of his teaching he acquired a great influence on the students and became a very important point of reference in the Neapolitan artistic panorama. When he was also appointed Director of the Academy, after the war, he became a master recognized throughout Italy with a reputation for daring experimentation, also thanks to the various participations at the Venice Biennale and the II and III Quadriennale in Rome.

Raffaello Causa in fact wrote that with Notte "[... ] modern painting of Naples begins".

But his reputation derives above all from the relationship with the students, who are attracted by his innovative teaching: from the school of Night will emerge relevant names such as Carlo Alfano, Guido Biasi, Mario Colucci, Lucio Del Pezzo, Mimmo Jodice, Mimmo Rotella, Vincenzo Romano Salvia, Luigi Malice and many others.
