The original canvas is coarse weave linen; it has a glue paste lining of cotton fabric with a cotton scrim interleaf. The lining is brittle and deteriorated.
The painting is loose - not on a stretcher. The original tacking edges not extant.

Paint Layer
Losses are notable in areas of tears, creases (result of handling and folding, it not being attached to a stretcher for some time) and damage across the surface.
Old original varnish has been impressed into the paint layer from previous lining processes along with myriad tiny losses to the weave tops, which present as black spottiness.
Varnish Layer/Surface
A thick discoloured layer of fractured varnish disfigures the image.

Recommended Treatment
The old lining needs to be removed and replaced to enable consolidation of the paint layer and support of the painting.

PTO

Actual Treatment
New lining canvas of polyester sailcloth fabric and Beva 371 heat-seal adhesive prepared.
Most of the removal of the old varnish was made at this stage to prevent damage or impress into the paint layer during relining.
The front of the painting was faced with Eltoline tissue and Beva 371 adhesive prior to the old lining being removed. This process allows for consolidation of flaking paint prior to lining.
The old lining was removed and aged and brittle glue layer removed.
The lining process carried out and the painting refitted to a new stretcher, prepared with a dry linen backing canvas.
Refitting the painting to the stretcher with copper tacks inserted through cotton binding.
