He was the son of Edward William Physick (c.1774-1862) and brother to Charles (born 1810) and Edward Gustavus (1802-75). Robert entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1837 where he won a silver medal in 1840. He had two sons, Robert Physick (born c. 1841) who became a painter and William Physick (born c.1843) who became a sculptor. In the Census Returns of 1871 his name is given as Thomas although it is clear from the name of his spouse and children that this is Robert.
