Half length, finely detailed portrait of Katherine Stanhope (1609-1667) in mourning dress. the black veil, dress and ribbon stand in contrast to the large pearl necklace, earrings and pendant. Reline canvas verso bears an inscription of "Katherine Stanop Countche of Leinster Sr. Anth Vanhyh", perhaps referring to the 1635 portrait of Katherine Stanhope by Sir Anthony Van Dyck. Illegible circular stamp on the canvas verso as well. Having a giltwood and gesso frame, H 37.75", W 30.25". Provenance: Collection of Peter B. Frantz (1921-2019), Bay City, MI. By family descent.

Condition Report: Canvas trimmed and relined, 19th century. Overall a heavy varnish fluoresces under UV light. Yellowing of the varnish, this painting would greatly benefit from a cleaning. Overpainting at the extreme edges where the canvas meets the frame. Spot cleaning fluoresces at the chest but does not appear to be overpainting. | Please note all lots show signs of wear commensurate with age and use, and the lack of a statement regarding condition does not imply the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from defects or the effects of aging.
