English Rococo Cast Iron Console
Monumental English Rococo Cast Iron Console, mid-19th c., labeled "James Yates/ Rotherham/ Registered March 22, 1842/ #1148", serpentine variegated marble top, scrolled acanthine apron centered by mythological mask, exuberant foliate and C scrolled cabriole legs, pierced stretcher, heavily scrolled feet, h. 33 1/2 in., w. 60 1/2 in., d. 25 1/2 in.Note: James Yates was a model maker for various English ironworks foundries before becoming partner at Phoenix Ironworks in Rotherham in 1823. By 1838, the partnership dissolved and Yates took over the foundry under his sole proprietorship until another partnership was formed as Yates, Haywood & Co. in 1846. It was during this period that the table in the present lot was manufactured. Interestingly, a nearly identical table is conserved in the collection of The National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, Australia.
