Relief with the Crucifixion
alabaster, in a velvet covered frame
relief: 44.5 by 30.5cm., 17½ by 12in.
frame: 59.5 by 36.5cm., 23⅜ by 14⅜ in.
Catalogue Note:
This fine relief corresponds to Cheetham’s ‘Type C’ of English alabasters representing the Crucifixion. Considered to be relatively early, between circa 1400 and the beginning of the 15th century, reliefs under this grouping typically show the swooning Virgin supported by at least two figures, and two male figures on the right, usually identified as the centurion and Longinus. The present composition finds parallels in two reliefs in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (inv. nos. A34-1946 and A172-1946) and another in the Musée du Perigord, Perigueux, France (Cheetham, op. cit. 2003, p. 121, no. 8, fig. 50). Like these other early examples of this subject, the present alabaster incorporates an embattled top.
