Flemish painter and draughtsman, Adam van Noort became a master of the Guild of Saint Luke in 1587. For almost one year, he was the teacher of Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) and later the one of his son-in-law Jacob Jordaens (1593-1678).
Known for paintings of religious subjects and portraits, he painted a Preaching of Saint John, now at the Rubenshuis, Antwerp (inv. cat. RH.S.001), which may have inspired the present painting.
