The present composition derives from a print designed by Paul Bril in 1590, and published as part of a pair. Rather than a direct copy, the work is an adaptation of Bril's invention, translating the engraving into a richly detailed painting on copper.
Although formerly attributed to Paul Bril, the painting cannot be accepted as an autograph work. The copper support bears the maker's mark of Pieter Stas, an Antwerp copper-plate manufacturer active circa 1587-1610. Since Bril settled permanently in Rome from 1582 onward and remained there for the rest of his career, the marked support strongly suggests production in Antwerp rather than by the artist himself.
The stamped date of 1603 appears to be contemporary with the painting, especially since many Bril imitations were produced shortly after 1600 in Antwerp.
