An Ottoman walrus ivory-hilted coral-set steel sword (yataghan), Turkey, 19th Century
the single-edged steel blade of slightly curved form, engraved and decorated with inscription-filled cartouche and makers stamp to one side, the walrus-ivory grips with prominent ears forming the pommel, the front and back strap and forte set with coral (corallium rubrum), the wood scabbard clad in silver decorated in repoussé with foliate designs, the upper part with bands of filigree
