Eric Gill ARA (1882-1940) Eric Gill ARA (1882-1940) 'In Domum Matris Meae', 1930 wood engraving, inscribed 'R.H from EG', l.r., in pencil image 14.5 x 6.7cm RH was René Hague, Gill's partner in Hague & Gill and husband of his daughter Joanna. The engraving was made to illustrate the Cranach Press Canticum Canticorum. Christopher Skelton in 'The Engravings of Eric Gill' says, 'In 1925 'The Song of Songs' provided the ideal theme wherein the engraver's religious and erotic impulses could each reinforce the other. Certainly no other subject inspired him to this degree until he engraved the still finer wood-blocks for the Cranach Press Canticum Canticorum'. Condition Report: Framed 36.5 x 27cm There is dirt to the mount, and a small crease to the top left corner with a small scuff at the edge of the printed area in the same area, please see images. Not viewed out of glazed frame, the print is framed with an acidic mount.
