A leading German Expressionist artist, Heckel was a founding member of the Die Brücke artist group. The group was formed in 1905 alongside Karl Schmidt-Rotluff, Fritz Bleyl, and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner while the men studied in Dresden, lasting until 1913. The collective opposed the art conventions of the day and explored expressive and primitive forms and techniques. After the group dissolved, Heckel staged his first solo show at Gallery Fritz Gurlitt. His works are held in permanent collections of many prestigious institutions world-wide. Item not examined outside of mounting

- toning and discoloration to sheet; abrasions, handling wear, and bumped edges to sheet; residue to sheet at upper right and left corners and at lower middle edge; sheet is askew in mounting; abrasions to frame.
