Ernst Van Leyden (American, 1892-1969), Here and Now I, 1967 Color Lithograph

[ translate ]

Ernst Van Leyden (1892–1969) was a Dutch-born American visual artist whose career moved from expressionist painting toward abstraction. He trained in Europe and worked internationally before emigrating to the United States during World War II, later spending a decade in California. Known early for murals and frescoes, he began making abstract work in 1948. His later prints use overlapping shapes and translucent color to suggest instruments, diagrams, and mechanical systems. Van Leyden worked at the Tamarind Lithography Workshop in 1967, producing an extensive group of experimental color lithographs. His work is held by the Museum of Modern Art and the National Gallery of Art.

Here and Now I, 1967, is a color lithograph printed in blue, lavender, pale pink, yellow and light green on cream wove paper. The composition resembles a mechanical control panel, with a row of six circular yellow dials set above a linked arrangement of rounded bars, discs and smaller gauges. Inscribed in graphite “Tamar. imp.” lower left, denoting a Tamarind impression, and signed and dated “Leyden 67” lower right, with Tamarind blindstamps nearby. Sheet measures approximately 29.875 x 22.25 inches. Overall good appearance. The sheet shows light toning with minor handling. Remnants of mounting tape appear near the upper corners verso. Image presents well. Provenance of Martin and Enid Gleich.
