Silver and gold.
Private English collection, acquired in 1983.
BIBLIOGRAPHY:
- HOFFMAN, H. DAVIDSON, P. Greek Gold: Jewelry from the Age of Alexander. 1966.
- MARSHALL, F.H., Catalogue of the Jewellery, Greek, Etruscan, and Roman, in the Departments of Antiquities. British Museum. 1911.
Height 3 cm.
Statuette in solid silver representing Eros as a small naked child with wings on his back. His right leg is bent towards his torso to near his right elbow, and his right hand is up near the crown or diadem that he wears on his head. His left limb is slightly flexed but also more extended than the right. Traces of gold are present, especially in the area of the wings.
Eros was a primordial god, the one most responsible for love and sexual attraction, and was revered as a god of fertility. It’s very common to find his image in fine objects related to women’s jewellery, or on pottery for the dressing table.
In good state of preservation.
