Erste Höhenluft Radfahr-bahn. 1897.
The Germans, ever innovative and highly proper, opened the first high-altitude cycling track in Dresden—and to top it off, they offered female-taught cycling lessons "according to hygienic principles," whatever that means. Here, Cissarz presents us with a taste of the standards-approved action. Cissarz was a versatile German artist who painted landscapes and historic tableaux, but also designed glass, fabrics, furniture, ceramics, and metal works; he was active by turns in Dresden, Darmstadt, Stuttgart, and Frankfurt. Most of his poster output shows a fine sense of color and composition, and occurred in a ten-year period from 1897 to 1907. Rare and charming!
