Pastel painting "Male portrait", following models from the workshop of Jean Clouet 1530, made at the end of the 19th century. XIX - pp. s. XX – France
\r
Curious male portrait created by the workshop of Jean Clouet, a French Renaissance painter in the 1530s. Made with pencil or charcoal and watercolor at the beginning of the 20th century. It features the bust of an unidentified male character, dressed in the fashion of the time. The drawing was not finished by the artist, something that is reflected in the lack of color in some parts of the work. It is an interesting way to understand the process of creating works of art with pictorial support.

About the artist Jean Clouet
\r
Son of Jean Clouet, a painter of Flemish origin active in France. François's artistic training was in charge of his father, from whom he inherited the pseudonym "Janet. " In 1540 he replaced him as official painter of the court of Francis I. After the death of the monarch he continued working for the royal house of Valois, for which he painted and drew mainly portraits; His drawings were highly appreciated by Catherine de Medici, who collected these types of images in albums. From this stage are the representations of Henry II, Catherine de Medici and Francis II, all of them preserved in Paris, in the Cabinet des Estampes of the Bibliothèque Nationale, and in which the teachings of their father can be appreciated. His drawings achieved such fame that Pierre de Ronsard and other contemporary poets dedicated verses to him praising his skills as a draftsman. The formality typical of court portraits predominates in his paintings, with examples such as Henry II (Florence, Galleria degli Uffizi) and Charles IX (Vienna, Kunsthistorisches Museum) , which have been compared to the works of great portraitists such as Antonio Moro and Jacob Seisnegger. His best-known composition, Lady in the Bath, is preserved in the National Gallery in Washington. In the painting, which probably represents Diana de Poiters, lover of Henry II, or Marie Touchet, lover of Charles IX, François Clouet combines, with great originality, courtly notes with others of a realistic nature.
\r
François Clouet not only dedicated himself to portraiture, but also painted allegorical landscapes such as Diana's Bath, from the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Rouen. At the end of his life, in 1572, commissioned by the Valois and on the occasion of the royal betrothal between Margaret Valois and Henry of Navarre, he carried out a large decorative project, which is not preserved, and for which he had the help of two of his disciples: Jean Decourt and Pierre Gourdelle.
