Eskimo Artifact Group — Wooden Comb, Animal & Kayak Models, Tusk Lure & Shell Bowl
Thirteen Bering Sea coast Eskimo carvings and small implements, including a double-sided wooden comb, a partial kayak model, worn bear and seal models, an early walrus tusk fishing lure and a small shell bowl. The group has an appealing intimacy: objects for grooming and everyday tasks sit beside small carvings of the boats and animals familiar to their makers.
The wooden comb retains serrated edges around its shaped body. The bear and seal models are worn but recognizable, while the incomplete kayak preserves part of its slender boatlike form. A honey-colored tusk lure has an upturned projection and an opening for attachment. The tubular piece marked “B 59” has a hollow bore and engraved bands consistent with a needlecase. Recessed and pierced wooden fittings, a hooked component, a slotted toggle and smaller bead- or socket-like forms complete the assortment.
Wear is consistent with age and use, with checking, splits and localized losses. The long wooden point measures approximately 6 × 1 inches.
Auction Estimate: $400–$600.
