Ethiopian Religious-Motif Panels

[ translate ]

These are religious-motif panels from Eritrea or Ethiopia. probably written in a Ge'ez script from the turn-of-the-century. Ge'ez is the main liturgical language of several churches in Ethiopia and Eritrea, including the Orthodox Tewahedo Church, the Catholic Church, and the Beta Israel Jewish Community. There are five panels altogether, brightly colored on stiff paper, with inscriptions in Ge'ez in most of the panels. The script bears similarities to the Tigre and Tigrinya languages of the region, but we believe that Ge'ez is the script used here. The images at the top appear to be Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, then David in the lion's den. The images in the middle appear to be Abraham and Isaac, then Isaac with his sons Jacob and Esau, and Moses and the burning bush on the right. The middle panel on the bottom appears to be Noah, and the larger panel on the bottom appears to be the second coming of Jesus on a white horse.
The plastic frame has had some damage, but the plastic glass that protects the panels is still intact and the panels have been well protected. The overall size is 28 3/4 x 24 in. wide. The top two panels are 5 3/4 x 9 1/2 in. wide and 6 1/8 x 8 3/4 in. wide respectively, the middle panel is 5 1/4 x 15 3/4 in. wide, and the bottom two panels are 7 7/8 x 11 3/4 in. wide and 9 3/8 x 7 1/4 in. wide respectively. Provenance: the Hirsch estate.
