Etruscan Bronze Figure of a Magic Triple-Horned Bull, 4th – 3rd century BC; length cm 6; Standing with front right leg raised as though about to walk; the tail is curled on itself, laying on the back. The characteristic triple horns remind the depiction of the ancient solar god Tarvus Trigaranus; This statuette represents the Etrusco Roman religious syncretism, probably a religious or ritual object for a temple. Symbol of power and virility the bull is used as an image of fertility and beneficence, fighting on behalf of humankind against the negative forces of disease, barrenness and death. Untouched green patina. Provenance: ex BFA, Auction 43, lot 83; property of a gentleman; acquired on the European art market between 1960s and 1980s.
