Etruscan Silver Fermatrecce

c.9th-8th century BC. A pair of silver fermatrecce hair spirals, round-section body with flattened finials. 6.94 grams total, 26-28mm diameter (1"). ACR Auctions, Munich, Germany, auction 29, lot 166. Private Australian collection. Accompanied by a copy of the previous collector's cataloguing document. These items are known as fermatrecce, an Italian term for spiral hair fasteners, used for keeping braids of hair together. This type, made in both gold and silver, is particularly recurrent among grave goods from northern Etruria’s Orientalising period; as noted in Buranelli and Sannibale (eds.) Etruscan Treasures from the Cina-Alliata Collection, p.26, they are found in the necropoli of Vetulonia and Populonia.
