Etruscan, Villanovian "Bucchero-Nero" ceramic Superb Villanovan canthare in impasto decorated with pointed buttons and gadroons

RARE ETRUSCAN KANTHAROS MADE OF BUCCHERO NERO - IMPASTO. Superb Etruscan bowl or kantharos dating from the 9th century BC, from the Villanova culture, in black terracotta (bucchero nero) . It has two raised handles. The base is slightly curved, with a circular depression in the centre. The bowl presents decorative pins in relief on the whole body alternating with vertical incised lines. The pins are each decorated with circular lines and three hollow dots. Black terracotta called "impasto", which was the first pottery in bucchero nero, because of the hardiness of the used clay, impasto pottery were made without using a potter’s wheel, a technique that will appear only around the 8th / 7th century BC. Etruria, Villanova culture, circa 9th century BC. Height 16. 6 cm - width 10. 3 cm, very well preserved condition - small restoration at the level of the lip. Provenance: Germany, D. W. O. gallery. Previous history: old private collection assembled in the 1980s The seller can prove that the lot was obtained legally, declaration of provenance seen by Catawiki.
