Etrusco-Campanian Terracotta Dionysos Mask

Slightly bent forward mask showing archaic almond-shaped eyes with fine eyelids, smooth beard and long mustache. The hair is puffed up with very fine curls across the forehead, the ears are covered. Traces of red pigment for the male skin. Fine archaic style. For related example, cf. inv. no. 1873,0820. 466 in the British Museum database. Terracotta decorative attachments with the head of Dionysos are believed to have adorned wooden coffins. Their use evokes, particularly in Southern Italy, the strong inclusion of death symbolism in Dionysian worship. Mounted on an acryllic stand, collector’s numeration behind. Size: H. 4. 7 cm Material: Terracotta Culture: Etrusco-Campanian, around 480 BC Condition: Intact. Fine archaic style. Excellent modeling. Provenance: Swiss private collection, acquired 1990-2000.
