[ translate ]

Property from a Private Collection

Eugène Baugniès
French
1832 - 1891
Coffeehouse in Cairo

signed EBAUGNIES lower right
oil on canvas
Unframed: 160 by 120cm., 63 by 47¼in.
Framed: 182 by 143cm., 71½ by 56¼in.

Condition Report:
The canvas has been relined. There is a prominent pattern of stable craquelure webbing in the light pigments in the upper half of the composition. Under ultraviolet light there are extensive strokes of retouching visible to the background in the upper half of the composition, and it appears as if there may be two repaired tears: one of approximately 7cm length above the head of the figure seated furthest to the left, and another one above the turban of the standing figure to the right. There are also a few minor spots of retouching along the lower centre of the right edge, and a band of retouching along the lower extreme edge. Overall this painting is ready to hang.

Provenance:
Sale: Aguttes, Neuilly-sur-Seine, 10 December 2004, lot 178

Mathaf Gallery, London, by 2005

Acquired from the above by the present owner
