A monumental Europe wall map by Thomas Kitchin, based on the surveys by d’Anville and printed on four sheets by Laurie & Whittle for the Kitchin General Atlas, edited with the utmost care and extended with numerous improvements by other important geographers since the last edition of d’Anville and Robert. The map is of impressive scale, covering the entire European continent, from Ireland to the west, to the Asian steppes to the east and from North Africa to the south, up to the Arctic Circle to the north. On the map sides, explanatory text boxes and cartographic notes provide information about size and composition of each European nation. Along the map lower edge, across North Africa's summit, are depicted flags and insignia of the world nations, with the various banners of the British Empire, as well as those of the Barbarian Pirates, the Emperor of China, the Papacy and the newly established American flag, which shows here 13 stars, representing the 13 states of the original Union. The map is further embellished by a simple oval scroll in the lower right corner containing various scales of miles, as well as by a large baroque title in the upper left, with emblems of the arts and sciences.
