European Bronze Age Bronze Ring-Shaped Pendant (No Reserve Price)

[ translate ]

A beautiful bronze ring-shaped pendant, dating to the European Bronze Age. The piece has a rounded suspenison loop at the top of a ribbed stem. The main feature is an asymmetric ring shape with thicker right-hand side. Both the stem and the ring are gently convex. The back of the pendant is flat and unworked. Overall the piece is in excellent condition. There is a very small chip to the top of the suspension loop. A lovely smooth patina covers the surface providing a cool green tone to the metal. Around the stem and on the reverse there are some slightly rougher, more vibrant patches of oxidation.

European Bronze Age farmers differed from their stone-cutting predecessors – they used horses and chariots to work; kept flocks of sheep for woollen clothing; and used bronze as a standard commodity of exchange. Technological development was rapid; the manufacture of tools and weapons increased; and specialised equipment emerged for shaving, woodworking, and metalworking. At the same time, advancements in decorative arts were also gaining momentum. Crafters of jewellery, accesories, and other personal adornments utilised the versitility of bronze to explore new styles and forms.

Measurements: Circa L 7. 3cm x W 5. 4cm x D 0. 3cm

Provenance: Ex JL private collection, Surrey, UK
