European Medieval Iron Dagger

Western Europe, probably England, France, or Germany, Medieval period, 11th to 14th century CE. An iron dagger with a long blade and an exposed tang with a pommel a the end. The blade has a prominent midrib that runs to the tapering tip. The tang may have been inlaid with wood or bone at one time to form the hilt and to embellish this lovely weapon. The pommel is a large diamond shape and riveted to the end of the tang. Daggers such as this were carried for protection and worn in the belt often close to the owner's purse as a warning that they were armed. Size: 12" L x .75" W (30.5 cm x 1.9 cm)

Provenance: ex- estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA acquired before 2000
