European Viking / Medieval Iron Smithing Tool

Europe, Viking period to Medieval period, ca. 800 to 1300 CE. A hefty cast iron smithy shovel with a long handle and shallow blade. The handle tapers to a slightly flatter and pointed tip. The blade of the shovel is narrow and shallow like a spade. The surface is covered with a heavy mottled russet colored patina. This hefty tool may have been used for a variety of tasks during the forging process. Size: 15.25" L x 2" W (38.7 cm x 5.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA acquired before 2000
