Eusebius's De evangelica preparatione
Leonhardus Aurl, 1473
EUSEBIUS CAESARIENSIS (c.260-340). De evangelica preparatione. Translated by Georgius Trapezuntius. [Venice:] Leonhardus Aurl, 1473.

Probable third edition of a work by the Father of Church History, in a contemporary binding. Eusebius was the Bishop of Caesarea and a favorite of Emperor Constantine. The present work is an introduction to Christianity for pagans—remarkable for its preservation of non-Christian works which would otherwise have been lost. Among the passengers on this textual lifeboat are a Greek account of the Buddhist three marks of existence, some fragments of work by Sanchuniathon the Phoenician, and excerpts from the lost works of the Platonists Atticus, Numenius of Apamea, and Porphyry. This is one of only two books known from the press of Aurl. HC 6700*; BMC V 207; BSB-Ink E-116; GW 9442; Bod-inc E-049; IGI 3756; Goff E-120; ISTC ie00120000.

Super-chancery folio (314 x 214mm). 150 leaves. Lombard capitals and flourishes in red and green, red capital strokes (paper edges chipped, especially at ends, dampstaining, wormholes). Contemporary blindstamped calf over wooden boards, German manuscript document dated 1473 at Vienna used as front pastedown, rear pastdown with printed waste from another edition of Eusebius, 4 pages of manuscript notes on the text and table of contents at beginning, one brass catchplate remaining (worn with chips, spine cracking, lacking straps). Provenance: marginalia in several hands, in Greek and Latin – Magister Johannes Plüml (c.1450-1508; dean of arts faculty at Ingolstadt; pasted armorial and inscription dated 1492) – acquired from H.P. Kraus, New York, 20 November 1957.
