Evelyn Ackerman (American, 1924-2012) and Jerome Ackerman (American, 1920-2019) Ellipses Mosaic, circa 1958, ERA Industries Glass tile mosaic, lacquered wood 12-3x4 x 60-1x2 x 1-1x4 inches (32.4 x 153.7 x 3.2 cm) Evelyn and Jerome Ackerman were accomplished figures in the American design and decoration scene, leaving behind a unique, personal and fascinating body of work that is at once modern while also fully drawing on the decorative traditions of the many cultures that inspired them. In carved panels, weavings and mosaic panels, various visual motifs, including simple geometric patterns, figures, and abstract designs, were presented in bright, contrasting, and often saturated colors. The Ellipses panel is one of the Ackerman's most rigorous pattern mosaics, and is an outstanding example of their work.
