Den Hartog studied art at the Rotterdam Academy of Visual Arts and Technical Sciences from 1971 to 1976 and was taught by Arie Teeuwisse and Bram Roth, among others. He initially started making sculptures in ceramics, but then specialized in bronze casting. Den Hartog is known for its stylized bronze animal figures. Birds and bulls in particular are recurring subjects. His daughter Eline also served as an inspiration to him, as can be seen from his images of ballet and swimming lessons. He strives for a certain playfulness and humor in his work, which is clearly reflected in his treatment of themes from Greek mythology, including Leda and the swan and Europa and the bull.
