Excellent Chinese 8 Panel Coromandel Screen, Dao Guang

Excellent Chinese 8 Panel Coromandel Screen with Both Sides Carved, Dao Guang (c. 1820-1850) or earlier. The panels are depicting a famous battle scene from the Chinese historical fiction novel, Legends of Sui and Tang Dynasties. The author, Chu Renhuo is from the Qing Dynasty. But the stories are based on history during the fall of the Sui Dynasty and the rise of the Tang Dynasty. In this battle, people from WaGangZhai (coup army) are fighting against the army of the Emperor Tang of Sui Dynasty, personal name Yang Guang. The character on the triangular flag is the surname of the Emperor’s Army. The military formation the Yang army set up to defend against the WaGangZhai army. There were eight of those bronze flag stand set up to form the defense system. But they all got destroyed by the coup army. The battle is probably fought somewhere outside the city of Deng Zhou, which was in control of Emperor Yang at the time. Traditional nicks and chips appropriate to age. Some mild, already solidified cracks.

Dimension: 54 3/4" high x 11" wide (each panel) 91 1/2" overall.
