Exceptional China Trade Fan, circa 1860, very fine gouache on paper with carved mother of pearl sticks. A topographical fan showing the three best-known ports of China: Macao, Canton and Hong Kong (left to right), all surrounded by brightly colored Chinese symbols and decorations with a mauve border. Supported on superbly carved mother of pearl sticks. The reverse with a Mandarin scene depicting 48 figures in gardens and various settings all with applied painted faces and silk robes (sometimes referred to as thousand faces). Gilt fan frame exposing both sides.
