Exceptional Flemish Hand-Woven Tapestry

17th century, of King Herod Agrippa II, his sister Queen Julia Berenice of Chalcis and Cilicia, and Roman General Titus Vespasianus (later Emperor), figures set within Herod's opulent throne room in the Palace of Caesarea Maritima in Judea, now backed in cream fabric.
112" x 199-1/2"

Provenance: By repute Oak Knoll Park, St. Louis, Missouri; private collection, Houston, Texas.

Notes: This opulent tapestry depicts the main figures of the Flavian/Herodian political alliance of the 1st century which was crucial to the Roman victory in the Jewish War and resulted in the siege, eventual fall and ultimate destruction of the Temple of Jerusalem.
Rendered in rich colors of reds, blues and greens, the scene revels in the lavish trappings of wealth and power - the heavily carved Solomonic columns with cherub reliefs and acanthine elements, the magnificent tapestry of flora and fauna motifs which acts as a canopy and frames the figures, and the sumptuous, embroidered fabrics.
Condition Report: The absence of a condition report does not guarantee that a lot is in perfect condition or free from damage and/or wear.
