Without the organic parts, all the living matter was replaced by stone : there are growth rings, cell separations, almost like worm cracks. Its features are those of the mineral that would have pseudo-transformed the wood : the silicon. And that’s what we call a "petrified wood" in the common language. Petrified wood, wood opal or silicified wood is, as the name implies, wood petrified by chalcedony. This variety of quartz is actually fossilized wood and in some cases it may contain opal traces as the wood opal name reveals.
