First American edition of this popular travel book published first in 1867 in London by MacMillan. Baker discovered new areas of both geography and societies of eastern Africa. Baker sailed up the Nile from Khartown in Dec. 1862 to meet Speke and Grant at Gondokoro (Juba), in Southern Sudan. In 1864, he followed the White Nile into what is now Uganda, and discovered Lake Albert. He writes extensively of big game hunting, elephants and the slave trade.
