Extinct Permian Reptile

[ translate ]

Claudiosaurus germaini
Late Permian
Madagascar
During the Permian Period, the supercontinent of Pangaea was still emerging. This Period, which lasted from 299 million years ago to 251 million years ago, ended in the largest mass extinction the planet has ever known. Here is a rare opportunity to acquire an extinct fossil reptile from that time. Claudiosaurus is not a dinosaur, but rather a reptile of the extinct diapsid group (which includes lizards, snakes, crocodiles, dinosaurs and pterosaurs) characterized by the presence of two temporal openings in the skull. In life, its size would have approximated the size of a modern marine iguana. Claudiosaurus possessed a long tail, large webbed feet and a small head. Measuring 12 ½ x 7 3/4in; Length of specimen measuring 11 1/2in
