Extra rare and very early Bowie knife of American Gold Miners "Gold Seekers Protector", 1820-30s. Early American Gold Rush Era, knife made in Sheffield for the American market. Very high quality steel blade, typical of Bowie knives, with a tattered inscription in a frame made of floral decor Gold Seekers Protector" (Kenneth). Burton, A Sure Defence, 1988. The ricasso stamped "SUPBURB W SHIPMAN - SHEFFIELD" - with trademark "SUPBURB". The Shipman were registered in the Sheffield knife makers directory of 1823 and W. Shipman was recorded as en exibitor at the Chicago trade fair of 1834. Handle is made of white metal and buffalo horn. Leather scabbard with white metal fittings. Sheath is damaged, see photos. Very rare collector's item for American History artifact collectors. Length 43 cm.
